The article is devoted to the description of the specific character of the toponymic vocabulary of the United States of America. It considers the history of the formation of the toponymic research, the importance of toponyms in the language and culture of peoples, the process of formation and development of the toponimic system of the USA and the influence of other systems on it.
The main characteristic feature of the toponyms of America is the fact that it has the words borrowed from the Indian languages and some European languages (English, Spanish, French, German, Dutch and others).
The research is intended for the course of Linguistic and Cultural Studies and contains the information on country studies which provides students with the knowledge on Geography, History, Economics, System of State and Culture of the USA.
