The article deals with the phenomenon of lexical gaps on the material of the comparative analysis of translation of Jerome K. Jerome’s books into Russian. Different types of culture-specific words as well as the main ways of filling the gaps in the Russian language are discovered. Special attention is paid to the process of borrowing of the new words as an important way of filling the gaps. The article systematizes modern approaches to the study of the phenomenon in historical and functional aspect.
