Abstracts:
The present article is devoted to the analysis of various verbal designations of olfactory manifestations in fiction. The author stresses the lack of lexical means of designation of smells, deficiency of a semantic field of olfactory phenomena, and also the lack of independent scientific researches on this subject. The author also considers the issues of verbal designations of olfactory space in fiction in comparison with verbal designations of manifestations of other human feelings. The author pays a particular attention to investigating the reasons for insufficiency of olfactory lexicon as exemplified in German. On the basis of studying a number of scientific works of the Russian and foreign researchers, the author concludes that smells are hardly codified. Besides, the author substantiates the idea of studying the problem of verbalization of olfactory manifestations is of principal significance for philology.
