Abstracts:

The article discusses the study results of functional and pragmatic features of linguistic means representing attractiveness in Los Angeles guidebooks. The study of attractiveness in English guidebooks allows revealing many peculiarities of a tourism product advertising in English tourism discourse.

The empirical material is represented by a corpus of examples found in the guidebooks Discover LA, Lonely Planet, Los Angeles and Tripadvisor. The main methods of the study are content and discourse analyses, descriptive and interpretative methods, methods of contextual analysis and dictionary definitions analysis.

Attractiveness is realized with the help of a wide range of lexical and syntactic stylistic means. The studied lexical figurative language means create a positive image of a described object in a recipient’s consciousness. The studied syntactic means can perform an interactive function where the strategy of intimization is employed. The addresser forms the relationship of a friend and adviser with the addressee and minimizes the effect of imposed information. Lexical and syntactic stylistic means have a fascinating influence on the recipient. The results of the study prove their high functional and pragmatic potential.

The article may present interest for linguists studying tourist and advertising discourses, creators and designers of English guidebooks interested in the attractiveness of a tourist object.
