Abstracts:

The present study is devoted to the analysis of possessive adjectives formed from the names of living beings – in this case, zoonyms – from the point of view of the transformation of possessive semantics into qualitative. The aim of the work is to identify the transition zones that arise during semantic transformation, as well as the conditions for the implementation of qualitative semantics in possessive adjectives. The relevance of this study is due to its being the problem of the inter-categorical interaction of linguistic units associated with the interaction of lexical and grammatical semantics. The material for the study was dictionary data, illustrative fragments from the literary texts of the 20th – 21st centuries. The work employs a set of linguistic methods of analysis such as semantic, component, contextual analysis. It is revealed that the qualitative meaning of possessive adjectives is found in their compatibility with nouns. In a direct sense, compatibility is due to the nature of the substantive – the name of a part of the body of a living being, its habitat, characteristic behaviors and the qualities caused by this. In the latter case, a semantic transformation occurs, the result of which is a metaphorization of the meaning of the possessive adjective. The qualitative meaning of the possessive adjective finds its full embodiment when the corresponding phrase enters into a homogeneous series with other word-combinations with qualitatively characterizing semantics.
