Name of article:SPECIFICITY OF NON-EQUIVALENT LAW VOCABULARY TRANSLATION FROM RUSSIAN INTO CHUVASH
Keywords:

law vocabulary, transliteration, non-equivalent terms, calques and semi-calques, adequate translation

Abstracts:

This article deals with the study of specificity of non-equivalent law vocabulary translation from Russian into Chuvash based on the analysis of about 807 words most commonly used in law speech. The words under consideration were selected from the Russian-Chuvash dictionary by I.A. Andreev and N.P. Petrov. Three ways of translation are found to be used to translate non-equivalent law vocabulary: transliteration, calquing and description. There are frequent cases of simultaneous use of several translation ways: transliteration and description or calquing and description. This results in the formation of a synonymous series of one concept: the borrowing itself obtained by transliteration or calquing and a more detailed and descriptive translation of the term. The study has revealed that for obtaining an adequate translation, which should be clear, concise, accurate and meet the standards of the literary language, the most productive and expedient way to translate non-equivalent law vocabulary from Russian into Chuvash is transliteration, due to which the Chuvash language is enriched with borrowings from the Russian language. It is the Russian borrowings (often of Western European origin) that help to avoid the ambiguity of  law vocabulary.
