Abstracts:

The article is devoted to the study of the verbalization of the concept “protection” in Margaret Atwood’s novel “The Blind Assassin”. The article notes the increasing importance of studying the correlation between language and culture, due to globalization and the expansion of intercultural relations. According to the researchers, the main means of anchoring of culturally significant phenomena in linguistic elements is a concept that acts as the main unit of cultural linguistics. The article describes various approaches to the definition of the concept under study, and features differentiating cognitive and cultural linguistic concepts, the main of which is the collective nature of the latter. This paper also describes the four-component procedure of conceptual analysis developed by V.I. Karasik, the ways of manifestation of a concept and its classification, implemented on the basis of seven complementary approaches. In addition to cognitive and linguocultural concepts the researchers also distinguish literary concepts defining them as “a complex mental formation belonging not only to individual consciousness, but also to the psychomental sphere of a certain ethno-cultural community.” The conducted conceptual analysis of the research material allowed us to conclude that the main means of verbalization of the concept “protection” in Margaret Atwood’s novel are the direct nomination and use of lexical units expressing related ideas and containing in their semantic structure the sememe “protection”.
