Abstracts:

This article explores the genre features of Theodor Fontane’s marital novel “Effi Briestˮ. The novel, the genre of which is defined as poetic realism, is replete with pseudo-gothic elements. The identification of those elements and ascertainment of the significance of inter-genre inclusions make the problem under research relevant. The method of linguistic analysis of the text made it possible to identify and describe the features of the Gothic novel actualized by the writer in the form of clichéd characters (the villain and the young victim), clichéd motives(travel, exotic motive, motives of sleep and dreams), typical topological markers(cursed place), and the canonical core of the novel (the crime or disappearance of a character in the past). The elements of the Gothic novel are reevaluated in the further narrative, they are consistently neutralized by the main characters, while revealing additional personal characteristics of the main characters, such as ‘mysticism’ of Baron Instetten, his passion to educate others, even employing intimidation. Neutralization and removal of Gothic elements from the narrative, the actions of the characters contrary to Gothic canons, such as Effie’s desire to return ‘happy days in a haunted house’ or the reconciliation, even through intermediaries, of ‘villain’ and ‘victim’, contribute to the identification of signs of the genre ‘poetic realism’, emphasize T. Fontane’s critical assessment of Prussian Germany, the opposition of the humanist principle to progress, power and culture.
