Abstracts:

This article seeks to justify the necessity of rethinking and re-establishing the range of professional pronunciation skills that English language teaching and linguistics majors are required to develop. This change is conditioned by the status of English as a global lingua franca, i.e., the primary language of international communication, and the consequent recent change in international requirements towards English learners’ pronunciation. The suggested list of pronunciation skills is based on the recommendations outlined in contemporary phonetics research as well as Russian and international educational standards and requirements. It takes into consideration the necessity of developing students’ mediation skills as well as their readiness to participate in intercultural communication with the representatives of various sociocultural and linguistic backgrounds.
