Abstracts:The article discusses one of the ways of formation of personal competences of a foreign language teacher. This is a critical study of the image of a teacher of the GDR in literature based on several fiction works which are characterized by various degrees of taboo. As a result, employing the method of the contextual analysis, we can distinguish timeless central personal competences of a teacher: a teacher as an educator and a mentor, an organizer of educational and extracurricular activities; an organizer of aesthetic education and work experience of children; a teacher of active citizenship and high ideological level; professionalism, which is reflected in ingenious methods of teaching, in an integrated approach to teaching, in creativity, in understanding the psychological peculiarities of each stage of student’s development. The next important components of personal competences of a teacher are high authority among students, leadership, the ability to influence the cognitive and emotional intelligence of students. The qualities of a model teacher of the GDR coincide with the list of competences stated in the federal educational standards: citizenship of a teacher, leadership qualities, ability to create positive psychological climate in a group, tolerance, spiritual and moral upbringing of students based on their national values. Some examples from fiction works in the language being taught can contribute to the adoption of the timeless personal competences of a teacher by students.
