The article considers the experience of library activity as the most important factor of rural population socialization; reveals the peculiarities of formation and development of library science of the Chuvash Republic. Using a wide range of archival documents, the author traces the process of continuous change in the main directions, forms and methods of work of libraries and libraries and their socio-educational impact on rural residents. Nowadays, the library in rural areas is almost the only free source of culture and information which is available to villagers, as the library implements the principle of individual approach to every individual.
