This article deals with the problem of the transfer of vernacular vocabulary when translating novel «Idiot» by F. M. Dostoevsky into English. Using the example of three versions of the translation of novel «Idiot» into English, we study the approaches of different translators to the transfer of vernacular vocabulary when translating a novel, depending on the time of creation of the translation, as well as on the goals of the translators themselves. The article considers three variants of the novel’s translation, while the main attention is focused on the analysis of ways of the vernacular vocabulary translation. The article analyzes the degree of preservation of the stylistic coloration and specific national color of vernacular vocabulary in translation.
