The article considers the derivational history of compounding in English. The process of compounding in modern English involves the forms of hybrid verbal-nominal and attributive-nominal constructions. The tendency to avoid frequent repetition of multiword verbal syntagmas, the need for rational and efficient use of syntagmatic means of the language can be considered one of the main reasons for the formation of the above-mentioned constructions. High internal valency of the composite paradigm of the explored verbal-nominal and attributive-nominal formations is due to the complex effect of both semantic and syntactic factors.
