Abstracts:

The article examines the main trends in modern culture and some features of a new approach to un-derstanding food metaphors, related to these trends. It reveals the axiological component of these metaphors. The relevance of this research lies in its inclusion in the field of linguistic and cultural studies, specifically cultural codes expressed through language and their axiosemantic nature. The main methods used in this study are semantic, contextual, and descriptive, which include analysis and systematization of the material. The study was based on a sample of the examples extracted from the National Corpus of Russian over the past decade (newspaper corpus and social media), as well as the data from the “New Vocabulary in Russian” dictionary compiled by the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) in St. Petersburg and the materials from the websites containing memes and demotivational images. It has been revealed that along with traditional images of people, new images have emerged, influenced by modern cultural and aesthetic trends. The symbolic meaning of food products, particularly vegetables and fruits, is changing, reclassifying and gaining new perspectives in aesthetic practices and fashion. For example, words such as “cherry”, “strawberry”, “lemon”, and “tomato” are being used in a figurative sense to describe people. The word “zucchini”, which is not commonly used in figurative expressions according to dictionaries, has become more prominent in memes and demotivational images, where it is used to create humorous situations. This has led to the word acquiring additional meanings and implications.
