Abstracts:
The educational technology Reading Circles of teaching a foreign language fits into the frameworks of communicative and activity approach. Despite the fact that there are foreign scholars’ works devoted to the peculiarities of this technology use in primary and secondary schools, many issues concerning its use in the process of teaching English as a second language in linguistic institutions of higher education in Russia are still debatable.
The paper treats the technology Reading Circle as a means of teaching a foreign language that allows students to moderate the process of books discussion.
The objective of the article is to determine whether the use of Reading Circles will facilitate students’ more active participation in the discussion and their involvement into a study process. The methods used in the paper are scientific literature and information resources analysis in the sphere of Reading Circles use and empirical methods including a questionnaire study and an observation method and the study of activity experience. The technology was tested in the linguistic institute of FSFEI HE “Altai State Pedagogical University”.
The questionnaire results say that the Reading Circles use develops students’ motivation and their involvement into the discussion process that in its turn contributes to the development of foreign communicative competence.
