Abstracts:

This article is devoted to the study of genetic and typological links between Feng Jicai’s work and Anton Chekhov’s prose. The famous Chinese writer has repeatedly recognized the significant influence of the Russian novelist on his work. The relevance of the paper is conditioned by the necessity to draw a parallel between the works of these two writers, which allows us to determine the influence of Chekhov’s prose on Chinese literature. The article examines the reflection and refraction of Chekhov’s creativity in the works of Feng Jicai, explores the overlaps at the plot level, the types of Chekhov’s creative style reception by the Chinese author, and demonstrates the adaptation of Chekhov’s ideological content in the Chinese cultural tradition. The analytical attention is focused on several stories by Feng Jicai, which typologically correlate with Chekhov’s works, such as “The Devilish Power of Wine”, “Thick and Thin”, “Warning to Myself”, “The Scream”, “Two Doctors”, “Barcarola”. The material of the study was the scientific works of Russian and Chinese literary critics engaged in the study of Chekhov’s and Feng Jicai’s works. The main research methods are biographical, historical-genetic and comparative-typological. During the study, it is determined that there are thorough genetic links and typological similarities between the prose of the two writers, manifested in their artistic style, choice of themes and issues, traditional humanism, rejection of everyday banalities, as well as in the author’s recourse to irony, humor, meaningful reticence, ‘stream of consciousness’, etc.
