Name of article:EPITHET AND COMPARISON AS FIGURATIVE-EXPRESSIVE MEANS OF THE IDIOSTYLE OF ROBERT WALSER
Keywords:R. Walser, short prose, miniature, figurative-expressive means, epithet, comparison
Abstracts:The article examines the peculiarities of the use of epithet and comparison as figurative-expressive means in the work of the famous Swiss writer Robert Walser (1878–1956), who has been recently recognized in Europe and then in Russia as one of the most outstanding masters of short prose, a brave reformer of the novella and short story genre. One of the current trends in modern linguistics is the study of figurative-expressive means typical for a writer’s creative system at all levels of language. This work identifies and describes the most commonly used types of stylistic devices in texts of such a genre as “miniature”, in which the subject of the narration is assigned a special role. A comprehensive study of linguistic means and general textual analysis make it possible to discover R. Walser’s innovative contribution to the development of narrative art and to conclude that the maximum frequency of use in his miniatures are evaluative and occasional, individual author’s epithets and common comparisons. Preferences in the choice of certain language means contribute to the creation of a unique atmosphere and expressiveness. Masterfully handling words, R. Walser draws vivid images and conveys a mood imbued with lyricism. His miniatures are unique in that they allow the reader to see an entire world within one small event or object.
