Abstracts:
This article examines the image of a scientist in his development from the point of view of the writer Leonid Leonov. On the basis of the image of two mirror or curved mirror images in the novel “The Russian Forest” Leonid Leonov’s ideas about the problems of approaching the truth in the process of scientific research are considered. Unlike the existing literature on the subject of the research, which analyses the character of Ivan Vikhrov in opposition to the character of Alexander Gratsiansky, this article examines the problem systematically, pointing to the origins of the formation of one and the other type of scientist, as well as the author’s way of understanding the driving forces of science and demagogy captured in convincing artistic images. The author of the novel figuratively embodies the scientific paths contemporary to him; he is immersed in them not only as an artist but also as a researcher. The purpose of this work is to clarify the artistic and speech components that form the image of a scientist in the novel by L.M. Leonov “The Russian Forest”. These components influence the nature of the creation of the genre dominants of the novel determining both its structure and the symbolism and semantics of the style of the novel as a whole. The relevance of the study lies in the fact that the extensive research works devoted to the study of the novel analyze its separate aspects and do not address the aforementioned important issue systematically. Moreover, the prose dedicated to the image of a scientist in Russian literature solves it differently and not always convincingly, while L.M. Leonov does this with a high level of credibility, resorting to a set of means convincing that a multi-level synthesis, both in prose and in science, is capable of bringing us closer to convincing scientific and artistic results. That is why the author turns to the comparative historical method (F.I. Buslaev) used both for comparing characters within the work, and for determining the function of the components of the work in various figurative and semantic circumstances and to the semasiological approach (A.A. Potebnya), which together help to reveal the features of the individual style of the writer.
