Nature and humans in I. S. Turgenev’s novellas (“Khor and Kalinych”, “Kasyan from the Beautiful Lands”, “A Trip to Polesie”, “Faust”) are in focus. The paper notes philological and philosophical views in the artistic comprehension of the designated problem, gives data from the writer’s letters.
We analyze the characters with “internal integrity”. According to Mikhail Gerschenzon’s theory, the first type contains the characters “with a split soul”. The second type contains the characters with “internal integrity”.
In the Russian science of literature, the conceptual analysis of the characters of the second type in the mentioned works of I. S. Turgenev has not yet become the subject of special study.
The comparative method and the method of holistic analysis of a piece of writing are used in the article.
In the stories from the cycle “Notes of a Hunter” and in the story “A Trip to Polesie”, characters with “internal integrity” are identified and analyzed as the ones who do not oppose themselves to nature, but live with it in organic unity.
The story “Faust” reveals and explores the character who is in harmony with love, which is regarded as one of the elemental forces of nature.
