English for specific purposes, L2 learning, Academic Word List words, vocabulary level tests, receptive knowledge of a word

This article is devoted to vocabulary expansion for students of a non-linguistic institution in the framework of English for specific purposes. Vocabulary learning is one the most important, difficult, time and effort-consuming tasks in language learning. The authors justify the need to form L2 learners’ vocabulary as the basis for their vocational proficiency, paying attention to more extensive learning of the word, including the word origin, its collocations and constraints on use. Academic Word List words are taken as research material. The authors consider four main types of words found in specialized texts, vocabulary level tests, as well as the range of aspects of receptive knowledge of a word. It has been experimentally proved that both visual representation of a word with its form, meaning and use and a consistent repetition of a word in the classroom enable a word acquisition. Presentation slides are chosen as a means of facilitating visualization of the words. In conclusion, the authors show the importance of students' regular approach to their vocabulary expansion.
