The development of modern society has a significant impact on the worldview of a person. The study of the concept “traditionˮ and the ways its content is changing under the influence of the modern British culture seems necessary and relevant. To carry out the semantic analysis of the lexeme tradition, lexicographic data of modern English electronic dictionaries was used. To analyze the contexts in which the content of the concept “traditionˮ was represented, we used the text of Mike Bartlett’s play “King Charles III”. The use of the text of a play for the contextual analysis turned out to be the most appropriate, as it made it possible to explore not only linguistic data but also to analyze the current state of the linguistic representation of the concept. The application of the method of analysis of dictionary definitions, sampling method, descriptive technique, methods of semantic and contextual analysis led to the conclusion that tradition is not always associated with anachronism and stagnation. As an established system of values, tradition alsoguarantees stability, which is the basis for further development. Though initially the main content aspects of the concept “traditionˮ were faith, foundations and behavior norms accepted in the society, due to the influence of modern trends in the British society the concept “tradition” is more and more associated with stability and security.
