The article considers the functions of the onym as a means of expression in the text space of O. Mandelstam’s critical essay “Chaadaev”. The relevance and significance of the proposed research lies in the study of the poetics of proper names in the creative heritage of O. Mandelstam, which has not yet received proper coverage. The complex use of the descriptive method, the method of linguistic observation and contextual analysis made it possible to study the functions of the selected onym lexemes. An important quality of the essayistic Mandelstam onymy is its versatility: the use of proper names semantically with the involvement of meanings and grammatically. As a result, the onym expressiveness is complicated by morphological categories, syntactic functions and the process of the transition of the onym from one category to another. Grammatical forms of the anthroponym Chaadaev are a way of linking the entire critical article and a channel for communicating the author’s method of literary analysis. The functioning of the onym Chaadaev in the text of the essay reflects the features of the theoretical and poetic idiostyle of O. Mandelstam and characterizes him (the author) as a subject of thinking about literature. The essence of Mandelstam’s thought lies in Mandelstam’s cognition of the world of literature and in refraction of it (the world of literature) in his consciousness with the help of onyms. The name Chaadaev under the pen of the author functions in the space of a critical article as a lexico-semantic and lexico-grammatical means of expression, which translates meta-meanings addressed to the reader. The author uses allusion, lexical repetition, morphological categories and syntactic functions of onymy.
