Abstracts:
The article is the author’s take on the meaning of linguistic means in E. Zola’s novel “L’Assomoir” and their systematization. The aim of the article is to study and analyze stylistic means as well as familiar vocabulary in the novel. The subject of the study is supposed to be the interpretation of one and the same semantic units in different speech situations. The central character of the novel is Gervaise, a victim of the environment and heredity, her programmed tragic fate was caused by hard life and poverty. In the novel “L’Assomoir” there are 13 chapters, of which chapter 7 is considered to be a dividing point for “before” and “after”. The results of the study show that the novel “L’Assomoir” is built on the system of oppositions (man – animal, the Gouget – the Lorilleux, capital – province, body – spirit, abundant feasts – poverty), which is transmitted through the author/s use of argot and familiar vocabulary, comparisons and metaphors based on animal images. Through such metaphors, the principle of naturalism is implemented: the writer’s goal is truth and objectivity, reality as it is.
