Abstracts: | The article considers the word suffixation on the basis of philological works of the German Chuvashist J. Benzing; pays special attention to Benzing’s work devoted to the study of the meaning of the possessive suffix «-и» in the Chuvash language. This linguistic phenomenon, which demonstrates a wide range of semantics, is considered as an important component of word formation. The third person possessive suffix and its variants attached to the root as postfixes carry a multifunctional load, which is illustrated by a rich set of examples from common Chuvash speech. The process of suffixing is naturally accompanied by the creation of lexemes with a new meaning and with the transition of their stems to a new class of words, and this entire complex of functional and semantic structural changes is determined with reference to the examples of words given by Benzing. It should be noted that some of these words are out of use in the modern Chuvash language.
The author assumes that word formation according to the models of suffixing expands the scope of study of function and formation of derived Chuvash words, proving the generality of etymology of the suffix, article, pronoun, numeral. The structural, expressive, and categorizing value of the possessive suffix is characterized by its uniqueness and originality.
When transliterating new forms in the German and Chuvash languages, recorded by means of the Latin graphic system, the author made the letter-by-letter transfer of words by means of Cyrillic system familiar for Russian reader with additional characters for the transmission of the Chuvash letters «ӑ, ĕ, ç, ш, ч».
