Abstracts:
The article studies the art reception of L. Tolstoy’s novel «War and Peace» by W. Golding, identifies the main reasons for the genesis of Golding’s interest in Tolstoy’s oeuvre, draws some conclusions about the reception of Russian national character and Russian literature by the English writer. The main object of the study is Golding’s essay «Tolstoy’s Mountain», in which he compares «War and Peace» to the mountain peak and for this «novel-mountain» conception he reveals structural and conceptual features of Tolstoy’s novel. Detailed analysis of this conception suggests that Golding projected his own author’s markers on the Tolstoy’s novel (ambivalence of human nature, war theme, spatial images of vertical, philosophic text etc.) and simultaneously advances the hypothesis about «War and Peace» is one of writer’s sources of inspiration.
